From The Vet

Since Chance was hung by the neck, oxygen was most likely cut off to his brain for awhile.  In minor cases this causes disorientation, loss of appetite, a general dullness, and a “disconnection” to his environment.  You can see that in Chance now  It typically will resolve itself.  In severe cases, the brain damage and disorientation are permanent, he would never be the same and mostly likely would require special care his entire life.  Time will only tell how severe the damage was.

Hanging him by the neck can cause damage to his esophagus.  For minor damage his esophagus will be tender making it difficult to swallow and give him a cough or rasp like kennel cough. Chance has that now.  It often will resolve itself, but the damage can also be permanent, requiring life long care.  Only time will tell.

In a nutshell, Chances injuries are mental and internal.  He may look okay on the outside, but he is disoriented and has trouble drinking and eating, he is frightened of his environment.  If he is lucky, with lots of love attention, he could eventually regain his health and some measure of a normal life.
