Good News for Chance

Chance is happy

Tuesday, 7:00pm

Well miracles do happen. Chance’s blood work today showed he still has some degree of kidney function. Three cheers for Chance !

To recap, Chance’s original blood work last Wednesday showed BUN at 208, creatinine at 15.1 and phosphorus at 14.8, about ten times the normal range indicating his kidneys were damaged or failing, consistent with ethylene glycol poisoning. After 48 hours of heavy IV fluids over Thanksgiving and Friday to flush his kidneys, his BUN dropped to 135, creatinine dropped to 11.5 and phosphorus was back to a normal range ( 2.5 – 6.8 ).

Since then he has been on a low protein diet without any additional IV fluids to see if his kidneys could function on their own. His blood results today showed BUN dropped to 98. creatinine dropped to 9.3 and phosphorus rose to 9.2. The only thing keeping this from being a real WAHOO! moment is that his phosphorus level is back above normal again. But the fact that BUN and creatinine are down suggest that he still has some degree of kidney function, though very weak.

He’s not out of the woods yet. His diet continues to be a struggle, he has turned into a very picky eater and has lost 4 lbs since last week. But we’re trying different low protein, low phosphorus, foods to keep his diet varied and will get those pounds back on him. It is not known how much good kidney tissue he has or how much, if any, will regenerate. So this is likely to be a long process. He has a follow up appointment next Tuesday with Dr. Heitman to check levels again.

I want to thank everyone for their good wishes. We have received an amazing number of phone calls, letters, and e-mails. It truly is heart warming to know so many people care.

Chance is an amazing boy. Few dogs or cats recover from ethylene glycol poisoning. I have to believe he is here for a purpose.

More to come….

WAHOOOOOOO!!! I’m happy!! thank you so much foster family for taking care of this beautiful boy!! and keeping us all updated. good energy and prayers coming your way!!

  • DOGLVR:

Chance looks pretty happy here!! my dog had to eat KD kibble too…..she’s not fussy tho- she loves it……I just add warm water….she eats it right up…..

  • admin:

Thanks for the tip DOGLVR. Chance has become pretty picky, one day he will gobble something down, then the next day turn his nose up at it. The only thing he never seems to tire of is the cat food… which of course is not good for him.

  • Cindi and David Haynes:

I am so looking forward to seeing Chance on Thursday he is an amazing dog! and yes he is here for a purpose. You have done an amazing job as his foster dad the love he feels radiates in Chance clearly seen in his pictures you have shared with us. He is in our prayers and may he be healed and find his loving home maybe by Christmas the best gift of all!

Just a suggestion …. when I put warm water in my dogs food mixed with ground turkey and rice they love it. The warm water in dried food makes a little gravey . Just a suggestion. xoxo love to you and Chance.

  • FosterDad:

Thanks Cindi, my mission is to put those 4 lbs back on him asap. I thought I had a winning combination with lean ground beef, rice, egg, and bread. He ate that for a couple days, no he turns his nose up at that too. I even tried soaking the bread with a little beef broth. ..what a goof ball. I’ll give the warm water and turkey a try, thanks.

  • Leonne:

Miracles DO happen. We will continue to lift Chance up in prayer. Thank you to everyone who has worked so hard to keep this guy going.

  • Rusty's Mom:

Aaaaaw! What a pretty boy! Sure does look like he’s smiling.

  • jo:

Maybe one of the reaons he survived is to bring attention to how horrific animal abuse is, and perhaps by staying in touch with the prosecutor, the brainless/heartless mass of cells and waste of a life that did this will face appropriate charges. Hopefully, we can see some changes in the laws.
God Bless you and yours for providing foster care to God’s little 4 footed creatures.

  • Thanks Be To God and all the amazing people who dedicate their lives to abused and abandoned animals. People like you all are Angels sent from God to make this world a better place.
And then there’s “Chance” a dog with a purpose and 2nd “Chance” at life….I am soo happy and optimistic about these latest developments and will continue to pray and send positive energy your way…..God Bless You All and God Bless Chance!!!

  • Pat Fox:

  • FosterDad:

    Pat -

For the time being please contact us at ourzook@charter.net and request a pre-adopt application. We are still looking for a great home for Chance. Two labs, how great would that be ! Many thanks for your interest.

    Helo,
We are so thankful that chance has a chance he is beautful. I had a little girl her name is sassy she has been not only our pet but our little girl for 14 years. Sassy was adopted by us in 1994 she was the joy of our life with the exception of our daughter. Sassy was diagnosed with diabeties in 2001 sassy was givin two shots a day for seven years and had to be on special food we spent our savings on her and would have had it No other way. She has been my husbands best friend for all these years as my husband had been disabled for almost 21 years do to having brain tumors removed so he has been at home with sassy everyday by her side they did everything together. Our little girl sassy lost her fight with diabeties on Aug 11, 2008. We miss her very much and my husband is very lonely. Our daughter suggested we get another dog. We told her that it would take a while for us to greive the loss of our little girl. My husband and I heard the news about chance and we have followed this story and my husband is outraged that someone could do that to an animal because they have feelings just like we do. My husband has called almost everyday to news Three and spoke with Holly Doyle to check on chance. My husband has fallen in love with chance. Our daughter lives away and calls her dad everyday sometimes four or five times so that he has someone to talk with while Im at work. When adoption for chance becomes available we would love an oppertunity to make our home Chances. We know there are many people who would care for him we are just asking the oppertunity and asking that chance go to a wonderful home with wonderful people if we are not lucky enough to have him. Sincerly Mike and Mary Parks.

  • Sherry:

I am praying for Chance that he will have a happy, healthy long life with someone in a forever home. He deserves the best. God bless all who care about him and all who have helped him! God bless FosterDad!!!

  • Shawn:

Chance, you look awesome! We’re praying your health just keeps getting better!!

  • FosterDad:

    Mike & Mary -

I’m sorry for your loss, but what a wonderful story. You clearly loved Sassy dearly.

Chance’s medical issues have complicated his adoption. We don’t feel we can release him to his new family until he is stable and his recovery is underway. At the moment we don’t know when that will be, could be weeks, could be months. He is a remarkable boy and everyday improves a bit more.

Someone from our rescue group will be in touch with you soon to discuss your inquiry.

  • mamabear:

Keep the good news coming! It feels good that maybe if we make enough noise his abuser will get the punishment to fit the crime!

  • Sherry:

God bless those who want to adopt Chase. You are truly wonderful people!

  • Bethlynn Sanders:

I am so happy to know Chance’s health continues to improve. I simply can not believe anyone could be so very cruel to any animal or person. I wonder how the abuser would feel if he were stung up in a tree, beaten and given antifreeze to drink? I so hope the punishment this person receives will make others think twice before taking out their anger and furstration on innocent beings.

Thanks to all who saved this animal and those who pressure lawmakes to protect all beings,
    Blynn

  • Deborah:

What a heartrending story. I will be watching eagerly to see how Chance progresses.

  • Canadagirl:

My mother had a male Afghan that had to be fed boiled hamburger and rice every night for 5 years. He had kidney and digestive problems. He lived to be 17 years old. After he had to be put down my parents adopted a female Mountain Afghan Hound. The same happened with her at about age 10. For some reason bigger dogs seem to have these problems. Just a suggestion. I hope Chance continues to get better and finds a forever home. He has hung in there for a reason. I hope the man that did this to him is punished severely and can never own another dog.

  • Janie:

God bless you for what you are doing for Chance. You are wonderful. Thank you for giving us hope in humankind.

  • Jeanne:

After hearing the horific ordeal that Chance has been through, my husband and I cannot stop thinking about him. We pray for his recovery and are So very thankful that his life was saved. Thank God for Good People caring for him right now and for all animals in need. It is a Blessing to know that not all humans are as sick as the person that did this to him.Keepl up the good work in helping with his recovery and we will keep up our prayers!! Perhaps he will be ready for a new home in time for Christmas! God Bless all of you.

  • Randy:

It’s fantastic to hear that Chance is improving, it makes me sick every time I think about Jason Allen Williams and what he did and how someone could do that to such a sweet looking dog! His pain didn’t go unnoticed though, so what happened wasn’t in vein and this could possibly send a message to anyone else and will make then think twice before they take on such barbaric acts on such a sweet animal!

  • Julie:

This story has grabbed my heart, broken it, yet given it hope. I cant believe someone could be so cruel. We have a 7 yr old yellow (fox red) lab who is the love of our lives. She had hip surgery in February (total hip) and just recently had twisted bowel…and lived. We thank God everyday for our miracle dog, and for the chance to have her with us! When at the emergency hospital recently with her, a family came in with a pet who had swallowed rx drugs by accident, (got a pill bottle and ate the contents). Very sick, and family couldnt afford the treatment. It was sad to find out the day later..the dog had to be euthanized.
What is needed is a non-profit fund that people could donate to, to allow those with sick animals the possibility of treatment for these animals. The donations could also go for animals in this Chance’s situation. I donate to SPCA and the other organizations…but doesnt necessarily go to those animals who are in need of care but owners cant afford or those dogs/cats/horses locally who need immediate care in this area.- but are not involved in SPCA. Incidentally, the individual responsible for Chances condition should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law! God Bless You for helping this poor sole..and may he recover completely!

  • Rusty's Mom:

I hope it’s not wrong to ask but, could we have an update on Chance please? We are having withdrawals. Thanks for any info – even if it’s a one liner saying that he ate today. Thanks!

  • Canadagirl:

I had a male Blue Chow Chow that I brought home when he was 8 weeks old. He was the best dog I have ever had. This breed gets a bad rap along with other breeds. He was very protective of his home but that was his job. You did not come into my home unless we let you in. He was not aggressive he would just alert and then stand in the way until you were let in. He loved small kids and only showed dislike to a couple of grown ups. If he didn’t like someone that was enough for me. On 6-6-06 I had to put him to sleep. He had couching’s disease and was starting to suffer even trying to walk. I miss him everyday he was my best friend. I can’t wrap my mind around anyone abusing an animal and Chance was meant to survive and he has a very special purpose for being here. I hope Chance continues to thrive and find his forever home soon!

  • Canadagirl:

That should have said “cushings” sorry. Has anyone else ever had a dog with cushings?
